2、tyasairtravelisexpectedtodoubleby2027,andtakeadvantageofeconomiesofscale.ThiscasestudycoversthedevelopmentandimplementationofthislargescaleinfrastructureandITproject,whichwasplannedseveraldecadesearlier.ThemainobjectivesforenteringintothisprojectweretomakeHeathrowthegreatestairp

3、ortintheworldby,increasingpassengercapacity,cuttransfertimebetweenterminals,andmoveallBAflightstoT5totakeadvantageofeconomiesofscale.ItwasimportantforBAtodelivertheprojectonetimeandwithinbudget,andtoreducerisks.ThefollowingsectionsdiscusshowBAplannedtomeettheseobjectives.AChalle

4、ngeinSizeandScalabilityTerminal5isthelargestfree-standingstructureinGreatBritain.Ithas110aircraftstandsandover17kmofbagconveyors.Terminal5costBAandtheBritishAirportsAuthority£4.3bn[$8.5billion]tobuildandoutfit.BAsaysaround£75mofthesecostsarefortechnology,whileBAAinvestedatleasta

5、nother£175minITsystems.Theprojectlastedover22yearsandinvolvedasmanyas60,000people.Theworkhasinvolved180ITsuppliersandseen163ITsystemsinstalledinadditionto40,000hoursofsystemsengineering.BritishAirwaysCIOPaulCobysaidthateventheconstructionofT5involves:“creatingasmalltownwithafull

6、telecommunicationsnetworkfortheconstructionworkers,merelytoenabletheterminaltobebuilt.”CIOMagazine.ProjectManagementHowwasthisprojectmanaged?Theprojectwasbrokenintofourmajorphases.Theplanningphasebeganin1986andlastedtill2001.Thisincludedafouryearpublicenquiryprocesstoprovidetran

7、sparencyandfeedback.Thedesignphasebeganin1989andlastedtill2004.Thisreflectedfeedbackfromthepublicenquirywhichincludedcloseattentiontosecurityasaresultof9/11.ThedesigninvolvedadvancedcomputermodellingoffacilitiesandITsystems.Theconstructionphaselastedfrom2002till2007.Thisincluded
