2、eirclassicstudiesoftheregulationofemploymentinBritain.'ThefirstBritishuniversityprofessorshipsinthesubjectwerecreatedin1930,withanendowmentbytheindustrialistMontagueBurton.TheBritishUniversitiesIndustrialRelationsAssociation(BUIRA)wasfoundedin1950andsubse
3、quentdecadessawarapidexpansionindepartmentsand(oursesinthesubject.Butsomecriticsarguethatacademicindustrialrelationsisnowoutdated;eithertheproblemsofthe'humanfactor'inworkhaveallbeensolved,ortheyarebetteraddressedbynewapproachessuchas'humanresourcemanagem
4、ent'(HRM)ororganisationalbehaviour(OB).Westronglydisagree;andinthispaperweexplaintheintellectual,moralandalsopolicyargumentsforourdistinctiveapproachtoworkandemployment,andthereasonswhyourresearchandteachingareindeedmoreimportantthaneverinthetwenty-firstc
5、entury.Teachingandresearchinindustrialrelationsinvolvethestudyofworkandemploymentrelationshipsinalltheirforms.Theserelationshipsinvolvemanagementsandemployeesbutareshapedbyforceswellbeyondtheindividualworkplace:forexamplethepoliciesofthestate,thepatternso
6、finternationaltrade,thedynamicsofcapitalmarkets,thelinkagesbetweenpaidworkandotheraspectsofpeople'slifeexperiences.Thestudyofindustrialrelationsentailsawide-ranginganalysisofthepast,thepresentandthefutureofwork_'Itseekstoholdamirroruptowhatgoesonintheworl
7、dofwork','providinganunderstandingwhichthedirectparticipantsmaysometimesfinduncomfortable,Theenvironmentofemploymenthasbecomemorecomplexthaninthepast,withanincreasinglydiverselabourforce,radicalchangesinthetechnologyandorganisationofwork,theshifttowardsa'
