2、heproblems,andintroduceanovelapproachtotheirsolution,basedaroundgoal-structuringconcepts,whichwebelievewillamelioratesomeofthedifficulties.Wediscusstheuseofmodifiedandnewformsofsafetyassessmentnotationstoprovideevidenceofsafety,andtheuseofdataderivedfromsuchnotationsasameansofprovidingquantif
3、iedinputintothedesignassessmentprocess.Wethenshowhowthedesignassessmentcanbepartiallyautomated,andfromthisdevelopsomeideasonhowwemightmovefromanalyticaltosyntheticapproaches,usingsafetycriteriaandevidenceasafitnessfunctionforcomparingalternativeautomatically-generateddesigns.Keywordssafetyass
