3、magingandmanipulatingmatteratthenanoscale.AsnotedintheNationalNanotechnologyInitiativePlan,“Theseinstruments,includingscanningtunnelingmicroscopes,atomicforcemicroscopes,andnear-fieldmicroscopes,providethe‘eyes’and‘fingers’requiredfornanostructuremeasurementandma
4、nipulation”[NNI,2000].Hereinweproposetoinvestigatetheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofcarbonnanotubes[Iijima,1991]asAFMprobetipswiththetwooutcomes:1)Amatrixofquantitativeandqualitativeperformancecharacteristics(suchasimagingspeed,topographicalaccuracy,andimagequality)
5、forarangeofnanotubedimensionsandorientations.Thiswillincludeimagesofsurfacesneverbeforeinvestigatedwithananotubetip,possiblyinliquidandwillusetipsfabricatedatUNRforthisstudy.2)Inadditiontothemechanicalpropertyrelationofcarbonnanotubestoimagequality,thedatacollect
6、edtooptimizethenanotubetipswillalsobeusedtoinvestigateYoung’smodulusofsingleandmulti-wallcarbonnanotubes–whichisstillnotfullydefined.Nanotubetipshavemuchtooffer,butarigorousinvestigationoftheirutilityonawiderangeofsampleshasyettobepresentedanddeservesattention.Th
7、esedatawillbeconsolidatedtotesthypothesesofoptimumparametersfornanotubeAFMprobesandwillalsoserveasafoundationfortestingthemechanicalpropertiesofcarbonnanotubes.ThefabricationandstudyofoptimumnanotubeAFMprobetipswillpositionustopursuefurtherworkinadvancednanoimagi
8、ngandmanipulation.Inaddition,thelargeamountofnanotubebucklingandbendingdatagatheredfromthiseffortalongwiththecorrespondinganalysisofthedata,willprepareustowork
