3、isthegreenery?Forme,ifwearetolookatgreenbuildingsoreco-logicalbuildingsatthismostfundamentallevelofunderstandingitisnecessarytobringmoregreen-eryintothem,andtobalancetheabioticconstituentswiththebioticaswithecosystemsinnature.In1986,werealisedabuildingforIBMwithplantingrunningconti
4、nuouslyupthefaçade.Thegreenerystartsfromapatchatgroundlevelandthengoesupwards,aroundthecorner,andmakesitswaytothetopofthebuilding.BeingbasedinMalaysiaweareofcoursemoreusedtotheconditionsthatariseclosetotheequa-tor,butwealsoworkinLondon,whichisfifty-twodegreesabovetheequator.There,t
5、hesunfallsmostlyonthesouthfaçade,andsothegreeneryisplantedessentiallyonthesouth,south-eastandsouth-westfacingsurfaces.Thereareanumberoffeaturesthatwehavelearnedaboutputtingvege-tationinbuildings.Forinstance,itisimportanttochoosehardyspeciesthatarespecifictothelo-cality,especiallyno
6、n-floweringonesthatsurvivewellinwinterandsummer.Theresistantkindsofspeciesthatgrowspontaneouslynearrailroadsandashedgesalongroadsidesarethekindsthatwetrytoselectfortallbuildings.Inecology,anecosystemconsistsoforganicandinorganiccomponents,actingasawhole.Natureconsistsofphysicalcomp
