2、disconnectorsforapplicationat500kVandover,istoensuretheswitchingcapabilitiesofthedevice.Thispaperpresentstheissuesandprocessesinvolvedfromtheinitialdesignthroughtofinaltestingofa550kVdisconnector.Theinitialworkconcentratedondefiningthedesignparametersinordertominimizeth

3、eriskofarcbreakout.Computeranalysisusing2Dand3Dmodelingofthecontactconfigurationwascar-riedout.Asafollowingstep,beforebuildingthedisconnector,theresultsofthecomputationswerevalidatedbyastatictestwheretheelectrodearrangementwassetmanuallyatdifferentgapdis-tancesanddischa

4、rgesbetweencontactsweremonitored.FromthecomputationalandtestdataafinalcontactdesignwasoptimizedFig.1.3Danalysisshowingthechangeofelectricfielddistributionwhenaleaderbridgesthecontactgap.andadisconnectorprototypewasbuilt.Finallythecapabilitiesforbus-chargingcurrentswitch

5、ingweretestedinaccordancewiththeIEC1259standard.TheresultsofthesetestsincludemeasurementandcomparisonwithEMTPsim-ulationsofthefasttransientovervoltagesgeneratedbydiscon-nectoroperations.IndexTerms—Disconnector,gas-insulatedsubstation,SF6,VFTovervoltages.I.INTRODUCTIONIS
