3、ctro-communicationsandGrithUniversityfortheirsupportoftheexchangeprogram.1AbstractWeareexploringagroupofverysmallstructuresthathaveextremelyinterestingproperties.Thesestructuresaresosmallthattheydon'tadheretothelawsofclassicalphysics.Thesestructurescanonlybarelybeseenwiththeaidofpowe

4、rfulmicroscopesuchasScanningTunnelingMicroscopesSTMandAtomicForceMicroscopesAFM.Butmanypeoplebelievetheyarethekeytoshrinkingcurrentelectronicsintothequantumdomain.ThesestructuresareSingleWallCarbonNanotubesSWCN.Carbonnanotubeshaveastructurethatresemblesagraphenesheetroledintoatube.The

5、structureofSWCN'shasamirrorsymmetryfortwo-typesofnanotubes,armchairandzigzagnanotubes,andtheremainingnanotubeshaveachiralsymmetry.WehaveinvestigatedthetransportpropertiesofchiralSWCN.OurworkinvolvesdeterminingtheelectricaltransportpropertiesofchiralSWCN.TodothiswehavedevelopedaGreen's

6、functionmethodbasedonLandauer'sformalismtocalculatetheconductanceofarbitrarySWCN's.Wehavecreatedaprogramthatimplementsthismethodandhaveusedittotestarangeofstructures.Wehaveobtainedgoodresultsforanumberofimportantcasesandgoodpartialresults(numberofchannels)foralmostallSWCNwehavetested.
