2、PontHospitalforChildren,Wilmington,DE19803,USA.AbstractOBJECTIVES:Toassesstheprevalenceofsmallintestinalbacterialovergrowth(SIBO)andmethaneproductioninchildrenwithencopresis.STUDYDESIGN:Radiographicfecalimpaction(FI)scoreswereassessedinchildrenwithsecondary,retentiveen

3、copresisandcomparedwiththebreathtestresults.Breathtestswithhypoosmoticlactulosesolutionwereperformedinboththestudypatients(n=50)andgastrointestinalcontrolsubjects(n=39)groups.RESULTS:TheFIscoresweresignificantlyhigherinthepatientswithencopresiswhoweremethaneproducers(P

4、<.01).SIBOwasdiagnosedin21of50(42%)patientswithencopresisand9of39(23%)ofcontrolsubjects(P=.06).Methanewasproducedin56%ofthepatientswithencopresisversus23.1%ofthecontrolsubjectsinthegastrointestinalgroup(P<.01).Fastingmethanelevelwaselevatedin48%versus10.3%,respectively

5、(P<.01).CONCLUSIONS:ChildrenwithFIandencopresishadahigherprevalenceofSIBO,elevatedbasalmethanelevels,andhighermethaneproduction.Methaneproductionwasassociatedwithmoreseverecolonicimpaction.Furtherstudyisneededtodeterminewhethermethaneproductionisaprimaryorsecondaryfact
