2、rExpenditureSystembymeansoflineartranslating.Assumingthatconsumersareconstrainedinconsumingpubliclyprovidedgoods,thesecondusestheAlmostIdealDemandSystemtomodelpreferencesasnonseparablebetweenprivatelyandpubliclyprovidedgoods.Theresultingdemandfunctionsdependontotalprivateex-penditure,relativeprices

3、,andthequantitiesofpublicprovision.TestingthepredictionswithU.K.dataestablishestheimportanceofpublicconsumptionexpendituresindeter-miningprivateconsumerdemand.THEDEPENDENCEOFPRIVATECONSUMERDEMANDONPUBLICCONSUMPTIONEXPENDITURES:THEORYANDEVIDENCEGEORGETRIDIMASUniversityofUlsterContrarytotheeffectofag

4、gregategovernmentconsumptionspendingontotalprivateconsumptionexpenditure,thequestionofhowthecompositionofpublicconsumptionexpendituresaffectsthepatternofconsumerdemandhasreceivedpracticallynoattentionintheliterature.Standardmodelsofconsumerdemandgenerallydisre-gardtheutilityconferredontheconsumerby

5、theprovisionofgoodsandservicesbythegovernment.Typically,suchmodelsinvokeaframeworkinwhichtheconsumermaximizesutility,definedsolelyoverasetof(freelychosen)privategoodsandservicespurchasedinthemarket,subjecttotheusualbudgetconstraint.Althoughtheymayentertainthenotionthatutilitydependsonpublicprovisio
