3、eandassociatedgrain-scaleheterogeneity,whiletheotherstressesthemacroscopicvariabilityofthemediumandthefield-scalebehaviorofsolutetransport.Inthispaper,weexaminetheconceptualframeworkandmodelformulationofthesetwoapproachesinanattempttoevaluatepotentialcommonality.Numericalsolversaredevelopedforb
4、othsetsofgoverningequations,andtheperformanceofthesetwomodelsistestedfortwosystems,eachincorporatingoneoftwotypesofmasstransfermechanisms.Theresultsshowthatdespitedifferencesinconceptualizationandformulation,themodelsproducecomparablebehaviorforsmaller-scalesystems.However,greaterdeviationsareo
5、bservedatlargerscales.Thissuggeststhatcautionshouldbeexercisedwhenusingmathematicalmodelingforelucidatingthespecificprocessesthatmaybeinfluencingreactive-solutetransportforagivensystem.Wealsoevaluatetheimpactofmicroscopic-scalemasstransferheterogeneityonfield-scaletransportinsystemsforwhichhydr
6、aulicconductivityisspatiallyvariable.Theresultsshowthatinclusionoflocallyheterogeneousmasstransferdoesnotappeartosignificantlyinfluencethemeantransportbehaviorforsystemswithfield-scaleheterogeneity.However,itdoesappeartoinfluencelow-concentrationtailing.Forsimulationsofreactivetransportoverexte
