3、rnityandindependentlearning.Thispaperillustratesthat,whilepostmodernitymayeschewmetanarrativity,itundeniablyembracestheconceptofmetacognition.Whilenoticingmaybeabuzzwordamongthelearner-autonomyset,ithasdistinctcorollarieswithinthejargonyworldofpostmoderntheory.Othertermsand

4、conceptssuchasdeconstruction,self-reference,agencyandevenFoucault'sdiscourseondiscourse,allpointtocommonbondsbetweenthetheoryofpostmodernityandthetheoryandpracticeoffacilitatinglearninginauniversitypreparationenvironment.Thispapernotonlyhighlightssomeofthecommonalitiesbetwe

5、enthetwofields,butitalsoproposessomewaysinwhichthedisciplinescanbecombinedandappliedinanindependentlanguagelearningsetting.Everyyear,thousandsofoverseasstudentspourintoAustraliaandNewZealandwiththehopesofimprovingtheirEnglishandsecuringaplaceinaninternationaluniversity.Atth

6、esametime,thousandsofnativeEnglishspeakingstudentscrowdintothepopularlecturesandtutorialsofthecontemporaryEnglishliteratureprogramsinthesameuniversities.ItisapeculiarphenomenonthatthereislittlecorrelationbetweenwhatgoesonwithinuniversityEnglishlanguagecentresandEnglishdepar
