1、TheResearchAssessmentExercise(RAE)isanexerciseundcrtakonapproximatelyevery5yearsonbehalfofthefourUKhighereducationfundingcouncils(HEFCE,SHEFC,HEFCW,DELNI)toevaluatethequalityofresearchundertakenbyBritishhighereducationinstitutions.RAEsubmissionsfromeachsubjectarea(orunitofasse
2、ssment)aregivenarankbyasubjectspecialistpeerreviewpanel.Therankingsareusedtoinformtheallocationofqualityweightedresearchfunding(QR)eachhighereducationinstitutionreceivesfromtheirnationalfundingcounci1.PreviousRAEstookplacein1986,1989,1992,1996and2001.Themostrecentresultswerepu
3、blishedinDecember2008.Variousmediahaveproduced1eaguetablesofinstitutionsanddisclplinesbasedonthe2008RAEresults.Differentmethodologiesleadtosimilarbutnon-identicalrankings.AssessmentprocessTheassessmentprocessfortheRAEfocusesonqualityofresearchoutputs(whichusuallymeanspaperspub
4、lishedinacademicjournalsandconferenceproceedings),researchenvironment,andindicatorsofesteem.Eachsubjectpaneldeterminespreciseruleswithingeneralguidance.ForRAE2008,institutionsareinvitedtosubmitfourresearchoutputs,publishedbetweenJanuary2001andDecember2007,foreachfull-timemembe
5、rofstaffselectedforinclusion.—Inresponsetocriticismofearlierassessments,anddevelopmentsinemploymentlaw,the2008RAEdoesmoretotakeintoaccountpart-timeworkersorthosenewtoasufficientlevelofsenioritytobeincludedintheprocess.[edit]CriticismTheRAEhasnotbeenwithoutitscritics.Amongstthe
