2、venthchildofacountrypriest(牧师),JaneAustenwasbornon16December1775atSteventoninHampshire.Herfather,theReverendGeorgeAusten,wasanintelligentandsensitivemanwhoencouragedJaneinherloveofreading.FromanearlyageshewasfamiliarwiththeworksofHenryFielding,SirWalterScott,SamuelRichardson,FannyBurney

3、andthepoetGeorgeCrabbe.Herearlyattemptsatwritingincludeburlesques(滑稽作品)ofpopularromances.Whenherfatherretiredin1801thefamilymovedtoBath,whichwaslatertofeatureinhernovelNorthangerAbbey(publishedin1818).Afterhisdeathin1805thefamilymovedfirsttoSouthamptonandthenin1809toChawtoninHampshire,w

4、hereJaneAustenisknowntohavewrittenherlastthreenovels:MansfieldPark(1814),Emma(1815)andPersuasion(alsopublishedin1818).Althoughherothernovelswerewrittenmuchearlier,itwasnotuntil1811thatSenseandSensibilitywasfirstpublished.PrideandPrejudice,whichfollowedin1813,featuresJaneAusten’sownfavou

5、ritehero,ElizabethBennet.Surroundedbyherlivelyandwarmfamilyandwhollyburiedherselfinherwritingandhousework,JaneAustenledalifeoftenknownforitslackofevents.Shedid,however,attractseveraladmirersandevenacceptedaproposalofmarriagefromoneadmirer—onlytochangehermindthefollowingmorning.JaneAuste
