2、tslostintranslation,”RobertFrost,Americanpoetandcritic,oncesays.Thisthesis,startingfromabriefaccountofoldideasoftheuntranslatabilityofpoetry,proposesinsteadahypothesisthatpoetryistranslatable(ChapterOne).Inthenextchapter(ChapterTwo)ananalysisofwhypoetryisuntranslatableismadeinbothlinguisticandcul
3、turalrespects.Itgoesongivingadetailedanalysisoftranslationingeneral,itsvariousdefinitions,itsmultiplefunctionsandtheauthor’sownideaofit(ChapterThree).Thenliterarytranslationisdiscussed,involvingitsfeaturesandmainfunction—aestheticvaluewhichistheverycoreinpoetictranslationaswell(ChapterFour).Chapt
4、erFivedealswithfeaturesofpoetictranslation,treatingatthebeginningtherelationshipbetweenpoetryandaestheticsandthenmakingacomparisonofSino-westpoetictheories.Whatfollowsisadiscussionofthelongstandingissueofformvscontentandthecriteriaofpoetictranslation.Attheendofthischapter,thefunctionofpoetryisdis
5、cussed.ChapterSixsuggestssomestrategiesinpoetictranslation,allwithastrongconsciousnessofcompensationofpossiblelossofthesourcetext.Thethesisendswithaconclusion—poetryistranslatable,iftranslationisregardedasapurposefulactratherthanasterileirrationalpursuitofexactduplication.INTRODUCTIONTranslationu

7、rtrendinthetranslationcircleshadbeenperfectfaithfulnesstotheoriginalbothincontentandinformandithadbeenregardedastheironcriterionasiffromtheholyBiblefortranslatorstoobserve.Thegodlystatusandtheimpossibleidealisticbelief
