4、torycorona-virus(PRCV)-infectedconventionalpigswiththecorticosteroiddexamethasone(DEX)asamodelforSARS.InnateandTh1cytokinesinbronchoalveolarlavage(BAL)andserumwereelevatedinPRCV-infectedpigscomparedtocontrols,butweredecreasedafterDEXtreatmentinthePRC
5、V-infected,DEX-treated(PRCV/DEX)pigs.AlthoughdecreasedinBAL,Th2cytokinelevelswerehigherinserumafterDEXtreatment.Levelsoftheproinflammatorycytokineinterleukin-6inBALandserumweredecreasedinPRCV/DEXpigsearlybutincreasedlatercomparedtothoseinphosphate-buf
6、feredsaline-treated,PRCV-infectedpigs,correspondingtoasimilartrendforlunglesions.PRCVinfectionincreasedT-cellfrequenciesinBAL,butDEXtreatmentofPRCV-infectedpigsreducedfrequenciesofTcells;interestinglyBandSWC3a(monocytes/macrophages/granulocytes)cell
7、frequencieswereincreased.DEXreducednumbersofPRCV-stimulatedTh1gammainter-feron-secretingcellsinspleen,tracheobroncheolarlymphnodes,andblood.OurfindingssuggestthatfutureglucocorticoidtreatmentofSARSpatientsshouldbereconsideredinthecontextofpotentialloc
8、alimmuno-suppressionofimmuneresponsesinlungandsystemicTh1cytokine-biasedsuppression.Thesevereacuterespiratorysyndrome(SARS)globalepi-naryviralspread,leadingtothemultiorganfailureseenindemicin2003to2004wascausedbyanewlyemergedSARSsomeSARSpatients(17).
