4、dge-nericstructure.Thisanalysisoftheacknowledgmentsaccompanying240PhDandMAdissertationswrittenbyNon-NativespeakersofEnglishsuggeststhatpersonalgratitudeismediatedbydisciplinarypreferencesandstrategiccareerchoices,reflectingonewayinwhichwaypostgraduatewritingrepre-
5、sentsasituatedactivity.Inrecentyearsaburgeoningliteraturehasilluminatedourunderstandingofthewrittendiscoursesoftheacademyaswellasconsolidatingtheimportanceofgenreasameansofinvestigatingthesituationalandculturalinfluenceswhichoperatewithinacademiccommunities.Thiswo
6、rkhasledtoanincreasedap-preciationoftheinterpersonalroleofwritingandanunderstandingofthefactthatacademicwritersdonotsimplyproducetextsthatplausiblyrepresentanexternalreality,butuselanguagetosituatethem-selvesinadisciplineandtoconstructandnegotiatesocialrelations.Y
