1、SolvedwithCOMSOLMultiphysics5.1FuelCellBipolarPlateIntroductionThisstudypresentsamodelthatcouplesthethermalandthestructuralanalysisinabipolarplateinaprotonexchangemembranefuelcell(PEMFC).Thefuelcellstackconsistsofunitcellofanode,membrane,andcathodeconnected

2、inseriesthroughbipolarplates.Thebipolarplatesalsoserveasgasdistributorsforhydrogenandairthatisfedtotheanodeandcathodecompartments,respectively.Figure1belowshowsaschematicdrawingofafuelcellstack.Theunitcellandthesurroundingbipolarplatesareshownindetailintheu

3、pperrightcornerofthefigure.MembraneBipolarplateAnodeFuelcellstackCathodeFigure1:Schematicdrawingofthefuelcellstack.Theunitcellconsistsofananode,membraneelectrolyte,andacathode.Theunitcellissupportedandsuppliedwithreactantsthroughthebipolarplates.Thebipolarp

4、latesalsoserveascurrentcollectorsandfeeders.ThePEMFCisoneofthestrongestalternativesforautomotiveapplicationswhereithasthepotentialofdeliveringpowertoavehiclewithahigherefficiency,fromoiltopropulsion,thantheinternalcombustionengine.Thefuelcelloperatesattempe

5、raturesjustbelow100°C,whichmeansthatithastobeheatedatstart-up.Theheatingprocessinducesthermalstressesinthebipolarplates.Thisanalysisrevealsthemagnitudeandnatureofthesestresses.1
