3、riorresearchindicatesthenegativeperformanceimplicationsofthisdecision;yet,littleisknownabouttherationalebehindthisdecision.Ouraimistofillthisresearchgap.Drawingonagencyandhumancapabilitiesframeworks,weexaminedthecontextualelementsthatinfluenceaboard’sd

4、ecisiontopursuetemporaryleadership.Withinasampleof375successionsoccurringbetween1998and2005,wefoundthatboardsofdirectorsweremorelikelytoselectinterimCEOsundercertainsuccessionconditions,namely,whenthepriorCEOwasforcedoutandtherewasnoheirapparentorwhent

5、hepriorCEOhadservedforashorttenure.Ourresultshighlighttheimportanceofcontextinsuccessionselectionsandprovideinsightsintowhyaboardwouldpursueadecisionwithseeminglynegativerepercussions.Implicationsfortheoryandpracticearediscussed.Keywords:interimCEOsucc
