3、nfor14perfectlyhomogeneousfoodproductsinmorethan400retailersinamar-Accepted3December2013ketcharacterizedbythepersistenceofalargenumberofrelativelysmalltraditionalfoodstores,along-sidelargesupermarkets.Theextentofobservedpricedispersionisquitehigh.Whenpricesinanurbanarea(wherethespatialconcentr

4、ationofsellersishigher)arecomparedwiththoseinsmallertownsandKeywords:ruralareas,differencesinsearchcostsandthepotentiallyhigherdegreeofcompetitiondonotyieldlowerPricedispersionprices.Othercounteractingfactors,includingdifferencesinsellercostsandconsumerincomes,makeRetailpricingFoodmarketsprice

5、s,onaverage,higherintheurbanareafor11ofthe14productsconsidered.Formany,butnotall,theproductssupermarketsprovedtobelessexpensivethantraditionalretailers,althoughaveragesavingsfromfoodshoppingatsupermarketswereextremelylow.Finally,theresultsofthestudyprovideevidencethatretailershavedifferentpric
