2、ni-refrigeratorsinourcars.NoonewouldcallusLuddites.Nevertheless,whenitcomestointegratingthesetechnologiesintoabuilding,weretreattoconvention.Wedoseeafewglowingcurtains,andsomethermochromicpaintonwalls,butthesetendtobeplacedintothearchitecturalenvironment,andt
3、husareeasilyreplaced.Seriouscommitmentisrequiredtogoanyfurther.Thematerialsandtechnologiesthatareintegratedintothebuildingconstruction,whetheritisinthefoundationortheelectricsystem,aremuchmoreimmunetochangethantheproductsandornamentsthatfillanddecorateourbuil
4、dings.Partofthereasonwhyisbecausethesecomponentsandsystemsmustmeetfairlyrigorousperformancerequirements,andpartisbecauseexperientialdataisalmostnon-existentandthereisverylittleinformationontheirlongevity.Inspiteofthisdisclaimer,however,smartmaterialshavealrea
5、dymademanyinroadsintosomeofthemostprosaicofourbuildingtechnologies.ThetableinFigure7–1‘maps’smartmaterialsandtheirrelevantpropertycharacteristicstocurrentand/ordefinedarchitecturalapplications.Withtheexceptionofsomeoftheglazingtechnologies,mostofthecurrentapp
6、licationstendtobepragmaticandconfinedtothestandardbuildingsystems:structural,mechanicalandelectrical.Asthesesystemsareoftenembeddedwithinthebuilding’sinfrastructure,manyofthesmartmaterialstendtobe‘hidden’.Mostnoticeableinthemappingisthatmanysmartmaterialsared
7、eployedassensors.Sensingplaysanextremelyimportantalthoughoftenovershadowedroleintheperfor-manceofbuildingsystems.EventhemostroutineoperationofanHVACsystemrequirestheprecisedeterminationofseveralenvironmentalvariables,particularlyairtemperatureandrelativehumid
