1billionoperationspersecond.Cybercrimeisanevilhavingitsorigininthegrowingdependenceoncomputersinmodernlife.Inadayandagewheneverythingfrommicrowaveovensandrefrigeratorstonuclearpowerplantsisbeingrunoncomputers,cybercrimehasassumedrathersinisterimplications.MajorcybercrimesintherecentpastincludetheCitibankripoff.US$10millionwasfraudulentlytransferredoutofthebankandintoabankaccountinSwitzerland.ARussianhackergroupledbyVladimirKevin,arenownedhacker,perpetratedtheattack.Thegroupcompromisedthebank’ssecuritysystems.VladimirwasallegedlyusinghisofficecomputeratAOSatrun,acomputerfirminSt.Petersburg,Russia,tobreakintoCitibankcomputers.HewasfinallyarrestedonHeathrowairportonhiswaytoSwitzerlandDefiningcybercrimeAtfirst,letussatisfactorilydefine“cybercrime”anddifferentiateitfrom“conventionalcrime.”Computercrimescaninvolvecriminalactivitiesthataretraditionalinnature,suchastheft,fraud,forgery,defamationandmischief,allofwhicharesubjecttotheIndianPenalCode.TheabuseofcomputershasalsogivenbirthtoagamutofnewagecrimesthatareaddressedbytheInformationTechnologyAct,2000.Definingcybercrimesas“actsthatarepunishablebytheInformationTechnologyAct”,wouldbeunsuitable,astheIndianPenalCodealsocoversmanycybercrimes,suchasemailspoofingandcyberdefamation,sendingthreateningemails,etc.asimpleyetsturdydefinitionofcybercrimewouldbe“unlawfulactswhereinthecomputeriseitheratooloratargetorboth.”Letusexaminetheactswhereinthecomputerisatoolforanunlawfulact.Thiskindofactivityusuallyinvolvesamodificationofaconventionalcrimebyusingcomputers.Someexamplesare:FinancialcrimesThiswouldincludecheating,creditcardfrauds,moneylaundering,etc.Tocitearecentcase,awebsiteofferedtosellAlphonsomangoesatathrowawayprice.Distrustingsuchatransaction,veryfewpeoplerespondedtoorsuppliedthewebsitewiththeircreditcardnumbers.ThesepeoplewereactuallysenttheAlphonsomangoes.Thewordaboutthiswebsitenowspreadlikewildfire.Thousandsofpeoplefromalloverthecountryrespondedandorderedmangoes(芒果)byprovidingtheircreditcardnumbers.Theownersofwhatwaslaterproventobeaboguswebsitethenfledtakingthenumerouscreditcardnumbersandproceededtospendhugeamountsofmoneymuchtothechagrinofthecardowners.CyberpornographyThiswouldincludepornography(色情)websites,pornographymagazinesproducedusingcomputers(topublishandprintthematerial)andtheInternet(todownloadandtransmitpornographicpictures,photos,writings,etc.)InMumbai,aSwisscouplewouldgatherslumchildrenandthenwouldforcethemtoappearforobscenephotographstowebsitesspeciallydesignedforpaedophilia.TheMumbai
