2、apeermentoringprogramduringthe2002-2003academicyear.Theparticipantswerethreesecondaryscienceteachers,eachinhisorherfirstthreeyearsofteaching.Followinganinitialtrainingand“trust-building”phase,theteachersengagedabimonthly,reciprocalmentoringschedulethatinvolvedobservation

3、s,conferences,andwhole-groupseminars.Teacherinteractionswerefacilitatedbytheuseofvideoconferencingequipmentandinternet-basedcameras.Thetwoprimarygoalsoftheprojectwereto1)assessprofessionalgrowthwithinfourbroaddomainsofteacherresponsibilityandto2)discerntheperceivedvaluet

4、heteachersattributedtopeercollaboration.Evidencefromtheprogramsuggestsbeginningscienceteachersbothhighlyvalue,andbenefitfrom,collaborationwiththeirpeers.IntroductionThereisnolongeranydoubtthattheUnitedStatesisexperiencingashortageofqualifiededucatorstoteachthenation’syou

5、thandthatthistrendisnotlikelytobereversedinthenearfuture.TheNationalCenterforEducationStatistics[1]citesthat1)increasingschoolenrollment,2)reducedpostsecondaryproductionofgraduateswitheducationdegrees,3)effortstoreduceclasssize,4)sizeofthereservepoolfornewhires,5)lowentr

6、y-levelsalaries,and6)reductioninteacherqualificationrequirementsinsomestatesaresignificantfactorsthatcontinuetoinfluenceproblem.Manystatesandteachereducationinstitutionshaveinstitutedpoliciesforteacherrecruitmentasitisestimatedthatbetween1998and2008therewillbeademandfor2

7、to2.5millionnewteachers,orroughly200,000eachyear[2].However,theteachershortageisnotmerelyamatterofinadequaterecruitment.Muchoftheteachershortageproblemistheresultofteacherattritionandmigration,especiallyamongyoungerteachers[3].TheNationalCenterforEducationStatistics[4]re

8、portsthat9.3%offirst-yearteachersleavetheprofessionwhilemorethan20%leavewithinthefirstthreeyearsofteach
