3、esources.Expandinguplanddwellersneedtomeettheirbasicneedswhileprovidingenvironmentalservicestotheexpandinglowlanddwellersthroughappropriatefarmingpracticesasthelivesandlivelihoodofthelowlanddwellersareaffectedbythesepractices.SustainableuplanddevelopmentisoneofthefocalissuesinthePhilippines,w
4、heremorethan20millionpeoplelive,andwherethereisadireneedtoincreasetheproductiveandprotectivefunctionsoftheirfarms.ThispaperrelatesourexperiencesinaparticipatoryapproachtodeveloptechnologyandinstitutionsforconservationfarmingandagroforestrypracticesconductedbytheInternationalCentreforResearchi
5、nAgroforestry(ICRAF),incollaborationwiththeAustralianCentreforInternationalResearches(ACIAR),andAgenciaEspanolaCooperacionInternacionale(AECI)inClaveria,northernMindanao,Philippines.Contourhedgerowfarmingwithprunedleguminoustreeshadbeenviewedasanimportantagroforestrytechnologytoinsurefoodsecu
6、rity,alleviatepoverty,andprotecttheenvironment.Forseveralyearswefocusedoureffortsinassessingthemanagementstrategiestoaddresskeytechnicalconstraintsofthissystem.Weobservedthatadoptionbyfarmerswaslow.Wethereforerefocusedoureffortsthroughparticipatorytechnologydevelopmenttowardsfindingalternativ
7、esystemsthatwouldaddressthetechnicalandinstitutionalissuesofconservationfarmingandagroforestrypractices.Wefoundoutnaturalvegetativefilterstrips(NVS)assimple,affordable,effectiveincontrollingsoilerosionandprovideasfoundationforfarmerstoevolvet
