3、okerneldesignpreventedtheSingularitykernelfromcrashinginthefaceoferrorsintheext2code.Performancetestingshowedthatwhilenotasfastasext2onLinuxperformanceisnotprohibitivelylowandtheoverheadofgarbagecollectionisminimal.1IntroductionSingularityisanewoperatingsystemreleasedbyMicrosof

4、tResearch.Itisintendedasaplatformtoinvestigatenewideasinoperatingsystemstructure.ManyofthedesigndecisioninSingularityrepresentadramaticdeparturefrommainstreamoperatingsystemssuchasWindowsorLinux[1].EvaluatingSingularity’sdesignpresentsachallengebecauseexistingapplicationsandlib

5、rariesmustbere-writtentobeported.OneresultofthisissueisthatFAT32istheonlyfilesystemthatissupported.ThisleavesSingularitywithoutafilesystemwhichcanmeettheIOdemandsofabenchmarksuchasSpecWeb99.SingularityprovidesbetterresponsetimethanWindowsinthisbenchmark,butcannotmatchthetotalsi

6、multaneoususersbecauseofthebottleneckoftheFATfilesystem[1].Thispaperdescribestheimplementationandtestingoftheext2filesystemforuseonSingularity.Theworksofarhasfocusedfullysupportingreadsfromext2.Cachingoffilesystemmetadataandrawdiskblocksmakesreadsspeedscomparabletoext2readsonLi

7、nux.Limitedwritesupportwascompleted,primarilytoaidintesting.Writesupporthasnotprogressedtoapointthatmakesaperformanceanalysisworthwhile.ThegoalofthisworkistoevaluatethedesignofSingularity.Integrationofawellknownfilesystemprovidestheopportunitytogaugethedevelopmentexperiencewhen
