3、firstChineseimmigrantsarrivedin1820accordingtoU.S.governmentrecords.Fewerthan1,000menareknowntohavearrivedbeforethe1848CaliforniaGoldRushwhichdrewthefirstsignificantnumberoflaborersfromChinawhominedforgoldandperformedmeniallabor.Therewere25,000immigrantsby1852,and105,465by1880,mostofwhomlive
4、dontheWestCoast.MostoftheearlyimmigrantswereyoungmaleswithloweducationallevelsfromtheGuangdongprovince.LiketheEuropeans,ChinesepeopleweresomeoftheearliestimmigrantstoliveintheU.S.ButChinesewerebannedfromimmigratingbetween1885and1943,whentheChineseExclusionActwasineffect.SincetherepealoftheAc
5、tin1943,immigrationofChinesecontinuedtobeheavilyrestricteduntil1965.Duringthe1970s,thevastmajorityofethnicChineseimmigrationintotheUnitedStateswasfromHongKong,followedbyTaiwan,withrelativelyfewimmigrantscomingfrommainlandChina.Duringthe1980s,inpartduetotheliberalizationofemigrationrestrictio
