3、efewgreatnovelsofallagesandcountries.Thesonofapenuriousarmysurgeon,Dostoevskywaseducatedasamilitaryengineer.Afterhisfather’sdeath,herelinquishedwhatevercareerhemighthaveattainedingovernmentserviceforthehazardsofliterature.Hisveryfirstwork,ashortnovel,PoorFolk,wasimmediatelyacclaimedandDostoevsk

4、yfoundhimselffamousovernight.Whileattendingameetingofhisliteraryandrevolutionarycolleaguesasaspectator,hewasarrestedbyczaristpoliceandwascondemnedtodeath.Afewmomentsbeforethetimefortheexecution,wordcamethathewasreprievedandwastobebanishedtoSiberiaforfouryears.Afterhisperiodofexile,hewastoservef

5、orlifeintheranksofthearmy.ThefamousTenYearsinaDeadHousewaswritteninSiberia.WiththeaccessionofAlexanderII,Dostoevskywaspardonedandhewasabletoreturntoacivilianstatus.Therefollowedthesuccessionofnovelswhichhavemadehimknowneverywhere.Inspiteofhispositionasamanofletters,hesufferedtheworsthardshipsof

6、economicinsecurity.Inaddition,frequentattacksofepilepsyandtheeffectsofhisyearsinprisonlefthimacrushedman.Hislastyearsweredarkenedbybroodingsorrow.Hewithdrewfromliterarycircles,becamereactionaryandembittered.YethispopularitywasthenatitsZenith.Hisdeathwastheoccasionfornationalmourning,andintheyea
