2、er,wecelebratetheunitythatkeepsusfree. Eachmomentinhistoryisafleetingtime,preciousandunique.Butsomestandoutasmomentsofbeginning,inwhichcoursesaresetthatshapedecadesorcenturies. Thiscanbesuchamoment. Forcesnowareconvergingthatmakepossible,forthefirsttime,thehopethatmanyofman'sdeepesta
3、spirationscanatlastberealized.Thespiralingpaceofchangeallowsustocontemplate,withinourownlifetime,advancesthatoncewouldhavetakencenturies. Inthrowingwidethehorizonsofspace,wehavediscoverednewhorizonsonearth. Forthefirsttime,becausethepeopleoftheworldwantpeace,andtheleadersoftheworldare
4、afraidofwar,thetimesareonthesideofpeace. EightyearsfromnowAmericawillcelebrateits200thanniversaryasanation.Withinthelifetimeofmostpeoplenowliving,mankindwillcelebratethatgreatnewyearwhichcomesonlyonceinathousandyears--thebeginningofthethirdmillennium. Whatkindofnationwewillbe,whatkind
5、ofworldwewilllivein,whetherweshapethefutureintheimageofourhopes,isourstodeterminebyouractionsandourchoices. Thegreatesthonorhistorycanbestowisthetitleofpeacemaker.ThishonornowbeckonsAmerica--thechancetohelpleadtheworldatlastoutofthevalleyofturmoil,andontothathighgroundofpeacethatmanhas
6、dreamedofsincethedawnofcivilization. Ifwesucceed,generationstocomewillsayofusnowlivingthatwemasteredourmoment,thatwehelpedmaketheworldsafeformankind. Thisisoursummonstogreatness. IbelievetheAmericanpeoplearereadytoanswerthiscall. Thesecondthirdofthiscenturyhasbeenatimeofproudachieve
