3、hysicsthatunderlyingsymmetriesarehiddenbythecomplexityofactualphysicalphenomena,anditistheobjectiveoftheoreticalphysicstouncoverthem.Takinghighenergyphysicsasanexample,thetheoreticalbasisforourcurrentunder-standingofpropertiesanddynamicsofelementaryparticle

4、sisprovidedbyquantumfield*theory(QFT).AgeneralQFThoweverseemstobetoogeneralforthesepurposes.ItisthegaugeQFTsthatareapparentlydistinguishedindescribingfundamentalphysicalinteractionsofNature.ComparedtoageneralQFT,quantumgaugetheoriesaremuchmorerestrictiveand

5、possessadditionalsymmetries.Thewell-knownachievementsofgaugetheoriesinhighenergyphysicsduringlastdecadesperfectlyillustratethepowerofsymmetryprinciplesinphysics.Thehigheranenergyscale,themoresymmetricbecomeinteractionsamongelementaryparticles.Thisisaclearsi

6、gnofsome(normallybroken)symmetrywhichshouldbeformallyrestoredatinfiniteenergiesorvanishingmasses.Anotherrelevantexampleisprovidedbythetheoryofcriticalphenomena.Itisawell-knownfactthatquitedifferentphysicalsystemsattheircriticalityexhibituniver-salbehaviour.
