2、eetintheevening,dividedintotwosessionsoneachoccasion:a.18.30–19.40;b.19.55–21.05,althoughtherecanbesomeflexibilityandalsoexcepttheweekendsessions,forwhichmoreinformalarrangementswillbeannouncedlater.ThefinalformalmeetingswillbeWorkshopsmeetinginacomputinglaborator

3、y.Thecourseisintendedtoofferathoroughintroductiontothebasicmethodsofsocialresearchthatmaybeusedinbusiness.Almostallthesetechniquesmaybeusedinallsocialresearch–indeed,somesuchastheexperimentcouldbeusedinanyempiricalresearch–butthecourseconcentratesonresearchforbusi

4、nesspurposes.Becauseteachingofthecourseisconcentratedintoashortperiod,topicsareintroducedbrieflyinthelectures,buttheworkshopsprovidetheopportunityforpracticalexperienceinsomeofthetechniquesthatarediscussed.Weareconsciousthatstudentswillnotbeworkingintheirnativelan

5、guageandhavetriedtoensurethatthesyllabusandthemannerofintroducingthematerialacknowledgethatfact.Wealsorecognisethatthecoursecontainsalargeamountofmaterialtobeabsorbedinthreeweeksandwehavesoughttodevisethesyllabusalsotoaccommodatethatfact.Therewillbeextensivehandou

6、ts(inEnglish)toaccompanymosttopics.Twocomputerpackagesareusedtointroducestudentstopracticaldataanalyses.TheseareSPSS(StatisticalPackagefortheSocialSciences),originallyanAmericancomputingpackagethathasbeenavailableinvariousversionsfromthelate1960s,thatwillbeusedfor

7、quantitative-dataanalysis;andNVivo,originallyanAustraliancomputingpackagethatiswidelyusedfortheanalysisofqualitativedata(suchastextfromunstructuredinterviewsorfororganizinginterviewdata).ThetextbookforthecourseOnlyoneprincipaltextbookwillbeusedfortheteachingofthec
