26、ality".AsHesseetal.(2009b:p.27)noted"Natureitselfneitherneedscategoriesnorhasanyknowledgeofthem"and"categoriesareartificalandalwaysdelimitedbyanindividualorcollectiveconvention".Humansmakeanddefinebotanicalterms,andweusethemtofacilitatecommunication,althoughalltoooftentheyseemtobeasmuchani
27、mpedimenttoourunderstandingasanythingelse.Thisraisesasecondimportantpoint.AsmentionedintheIntroduction,definitionsshouldasfaraspossiblefollowcurrentusage,ratherthanetymologyororiginaldefinitions(see,e.g.Rickett1954-56).However,currentusageisalltoooftennotconsistent,andthisisoneofthemajorfa
28、ilingsofbotanicalterminology.AsRickett(1954p.2;emphasisinoriginal)noted,"Tobeuncertainwhether"glabrous"means"freefromhairsandroughness"oronly"freefromhairs"isasbadasifπ[pi]shouldstandsometimesfortheratioofacircletoitsdiameterandsometimesforsomethingelse;orasifCumeantsometimes"copper"andsom
29、etimes"brass".Yetthisisthestateofaffairsinbotanytoday".Overfortyyearslater,thisisstilltrue(seee.g.Casteletal.2010forinflorescences),butweneedtoattempttoreachconsensus,otherwisecommunicationwithecologistsandothersusingbotanicalinformationwillbeseriouslyhindered.Withanyglossary,thereisalways
30、thequestionofwhattoincludeandwhattoexclude.Welistthosetermsusedinthesepages,someoftheircommonsynonyms,andalsosomeothertermscommonlyusedintheliteraturethathasbeenconsulted.Whentherearealternativetermsfortheonestructure,wehavechosenthetermthatseemseasiesttouseormakesmostobvioussense,thusweha
31、veprefered"straight"over"orthotropous",sincethelatterseemsalmostanoxymoron(even"atropous"wouldbebetter...),and"odd-pinnate"for"imparipinnate"sincetheformerisclosertoplainlanguage(inenglish,atleast)yetisnolessprecise.Therewillalwaysbetensionswhenitcomestotermsu
