4、pheric",meaningthattheywerepoweredbythevacuumgeneratedbycondensingsteaminsteadofthepressureofexpandingsteam.Cylindershadtobelarge,astheonlyusableforceactingonthemwasatmosphericpressure.Steamwasonlyusedtocompensatefortheatmosphereallowingthepistontomovebacktoitsstartingposition.Evenifpressur
