3、reliefandtomakethepublicmoreawareoftheproblem.Intheend,$100millionwasraised,whichwasusedtobuyfoodandtoprovidehelpwithdevelopmentprojectsinEthiopia.Theconcertalsomadetheheadlinesaroundtheworld,andputgreatpressureonpoliticiansandstatesmentodosomethingabouttheproblemof
4、worldhunger.LiveAidwasin1985,butformanypeopleinthedevelopingworld,diseaseandpovertyarestillaseriousproblem.AccordingtotheUnitedNations,tenmillionpeopledieeveryyearofstarvationorproblemsrelatedtohavingapoordiet.Infact,hungeristheworld‘snumberonehealthrisk,killingmore
5、peoplethananydisease.Inwrestlingwiththedilemmaofworldwidehunger,theUnitedNationssetupanagencycalledtheWorldFoodProgramme(WFP)in1963.TheWFPhasorganizedanumberofprogrammes,includingtheFood-for-Lifeprogramme,whichsendsemergencyfoodaidtocountriesduringtimesoftrouble;the
6、Food-for-Growthprogramme,whichtargetspeoplemostatrisk,suchasbabies,pregnantwomenandoldpeople;andtheFood-for-Workprogramme,whichhelpspeoplewithoutjobssupportthemselvesbygivingthemworkandpayingtheminfoodaid.Throughprogrammeslikethese,theWFPhashelpedmorethanonebillionp
7、eoplesinceitwassetup.Thisisbeyonddoubtanamazingachievement,butisitenough?Today,somedevelopingcountriesinAfrica,AsiaandSouthAmericastandatacrossroads.Whiletheyareseeinggreatdevelopment,theyarestillpoorerthanmanycountriesinotherpartsoftheworld,andthereisadangerthatthe
