4、chesintegrated,translationhasnowbeenbroadlyseenasanactofinterculturalcommunication(GuoJianzhong,2000).Sofar,muchliteraturehasbeendevotedtothehotsubjectofculturaltranslation,andthedisputebetweenalienationandadaptationhasbeenoneofthecentralissuesconcerned.Peoplearealwaysaskinghowandwhethercultureshoul
5、dbetransferred.Inthisthesis,theauthorholdsthathowandwhethercultureshouldbetransferreddependsandeach,eitheralienationoradaptation,withitsmeritsanddemerits,couldbejustifiedinitsownrightiflookedatfromacertainangle,andtheissueisthatthetranslatorshouldknowwhatheisdoingandhashisculturalawarenessandcreativ
6、ityintheactualprocessoftranslation.Cultureisanambiguousandintriguingconcept.WhathasbeentermedtheclassicdefinitionofculturewasprovidedbyEdwardBurnettTylor,thefatherofculturalanthropology,inhisPrimitiveCulture(1871):“Culture…isthatcomplexwholewhichincludesknowledge,belief,art,morals,law,customs,andany
7、othercapabilitiesandhabitsacquiredbymanasamemberofasociety.”Actuallyonepersoncanputuponedefinitionandtenpersonscanputuptendefinitions.Somepeoplesaythatthereare160definitionsforculture,andsomeotherssay
