3、insentences.“Theycanbethesubject,anobject,anappositive,oracomplement”(Rakoczy).Therefore,noun-formationcanberecognizedasthesubprocessofword-formation,anditwillsharesomesamecharacteristicofwordformation.Myessayisaimedatidentifying,analyzingandcontrastingthenou
4、nformationbetweenEnglishandVietnamesetomagnifythesimilaritiesanddifferences.Basedonthispaper,IhopetohelpmyreadersclearaboutnounformationandhelptheeducatorshaveauniversalperspectiveoftheunavoidableerrorsoflearningprocessinbothVietnameseandEnglishlearners.Nounf
5、ormationinEnglishandVietnamese14NOUN-FORMATIONINENGLISHBecausenoun-formationisthesub-processofword-formation,italsofollowsthesamemorphologicalrulesofword-formation.Nounsareformedbymorphemesaswell.Accordingtotheclassification,wehavecompounding,affixationorderi
6、vation,andconversion.Morespecifically:·Affixationorderivation,formsnounswithaffixes.·Compoundingisthecombinationoftwoormoremorphemes.·Conversion,“alsocalledzeroderivation,isthecreationofawordfromanexistingwordwithoutanychangeinform”(Conversion,2001).Forexampl
7、e,wordshiftsfromverbtonounwithoutchangeofitsmorphemes.Thereisothernoun-formationsuchasreduplication,clipping,blending,acronyms,andborrowing.Reduplicationisrepeatinganitemwithachangeinthebeginningconsonantorchangeinthemiddlevowel.Clippingis“aprocesswhichconsis
