3、ature;construingthetheoryinquiteterritorialterms,theyhaveclaimedthatthespecificcircumstancesofLatinAmericahaveproducedmagicalrealism.1Inthisessay,IexploretheuseofmagicalrealisminafamousepisodefromGarcı´aMa´r-quez’sCienan˜osdesoledad.Theinstanceoftheinsomniaplagueh
4、asfascinatedreadersandhasattractedvariousinterpretationsfromacademics;thesehaveusuallybeencentredaroundculturalreadings.Iexplorethepassagefromthreedistinctperspectives,cultural,historicalandliterary.Garcı´aMa´rquez’sCienan˜osdesoledadisaworkrichinhistoricalandlite
5、rarysources,andinordertohelpdeterminetheimpactofpoliticalandculturalhappeningsuponhiswork,IhavealsoreferredextensivelyalsotoGarcı´aMa´rquez’srecentlypublishedmemoirs,whichhaveenabledmetomakereasonedjudgmentsaboutthedifferentspheresofinfluenceuponGarcı´aMa´rquez’swo
