3、nasingleargument,diligentlyunfolded,oruponalinearnarrative.Rather,theyaregroundeduponaseriesofstrikingconceptualdistinctions–betweentyrannyandtotalitarianism;action,labor,andwork;politicalrevolutionandstrug-glesforliberation;thinking,willing,andjudging–whichArendtelaboratesandwea
4、vesintocomplexthematicstrands.Theinterconnectionsbetweenthestrandsaresometimeslefttothereader.Thus,itisnosurprisethatnew-comerstoherworkareoftenbaffledbyhowthepiecesfittogether(notonlyfrombooktobook,butoftenwithinasinglevolume).Theycannothelpwonderingwhetherthereis,infact,aconsiste
5、ntperspectivebehindhervariedreflectionsonthenatureofpoliticalevil,thegloriesofpoliticalaction,andthefragilityofcivilizedsociety(the“humanartifice”)inthefaceofmountingnatural,technological,andpoliticalpressure.ThesituationisnothelpedbythefactthatmanycommentatorsonArendthavetendedtos
