2、reatlovefortheAmericanpeople,andtoincidentallyadvertisethe'R--R--S--.'"Itssuccesswasimmediate."InSociety"appearedFebruary1,1899,andscoredaspromptlyas"OneNight."Thedemandforthebookletswasphenomenal,andMr.Kountzreceivedthousandsoffriendlylettersapplaudinghimforhishumor.Healsoreceivedflatt
3、eringoffersfromtheleadingcomicweeklies,themetropolitandailies,andgreatadvertisersthroughouttheUnion.Hedeclinedthemall,beingprimarilyabusinessman,andcarryingliteratureonlyasasideline.OnMay1st"InLove"wasgiventothepublic,withthepromisethat"InNewYork"wouldfollowonOctoberIst.OntheeveningofAu
4、gust9th,WilliamJ.Kountz,Jr.,turnedtothewriterofthispreface,andreferringto"InNewYork,"said:"Well,I'mthrough,allbutgoingoverit."Heneverreturnedtohisoffice,andonAugust18thhediedintheroomwherehewasbornnotquitethirty-twoyearsbefore.Wethenconceivedtheideaofputtingthelettersoutintheirpresentfo
5、rm,asalasttributetotheauthor,whoinlessthanayear'sworkliftedhimselfintoaplaceamongthenation'shumorists.Wehavereproducedonlysuchoftheprefacesandadvertisementsashavebeenwidelydiscussedfortheirhumorousquality,andwhichtheauthor'sfriendsinsistedshouldnobeomitted.Thetwoheretoforeunmentionedlet
