2、itionofthedebtorsconfinedintheFleetandMarchalseaprisons.Thelotofthesedebtorswasamostpitiableone,foracreditorhadpowertoimprisonamanforanindefinitetermofyears,andtheunfortunatedebtor,heldwithinthefourwallsofhisprison,couldearnnomoneytopaythedebtthatwasowing,andunlessfriendscametohisrescue,wasutterly
3、atthemercyoftheoft-timesbarbarousjailor.TheCommittee,consistingofninety-sixprominentmen,withOglethorpeasChairman,recommendedandsecuredtheredressofmanygrievances,andthepassingofbetterlawsforthefuture,butOglethorpeandafewassociatesconceivedaplanwhichtheythoughtwoulderadicatetheevilbystrikingatitsver
4、yroot,thedifficultywhichmanyfoundinearningalivingintheovercrowdedcities.In1663KingCharlesII.hadgrantedtoeight"LordsProprietors"theportionofNorthAmericalyingbetweenthe31stand36thdegreesoflatitude,enlargingtheboundariesin1665to29deg.and36deg.30min.By1728mostoftheseLordsProprietorshadtiredoftheiratte
5、mpttogovernthecoloniestheyhadestablishedin"Carolina",andin1729sevenoftheeightsoldtheirinteresttotheEnglishcrown,thedistrictbeingdividedinto"NorthCarolina","SouthCarolina",andamoresoutherlyportion,nominallyincludedinthelatter,whichwasheldinreserve.TothisunusedlandthethoughtsofOglethorpeturned,andhe
