3、asetsfrom20to33yearsfor41meteorologicalstationsintheBolivianAltiplano.Fouragro-climaticindicatorsfortheregionwereobtainedbyvalidatedcalculationprocedures.Thereferenceevapotranspiration,thelengthoftherainyseason,theseverityofintra-seasonaldryspellsandthemonthlyfrostrisksweredeterm

4、inedforeachofthestations.Togetageographicalcoverage,thepointdataweresubsequentlyenteredinaGISenvironmentandinterpolatedusingordinarykriging,withorwithoutincorporatinganisotropy.Thepresentedcasestudyfocusesonquinoa(ChenopodiumquinoaWilld.),animportantcropintheregionthatiscultivate

5、dduringtheshortandirregularrainfallseasonandthatiswelladaptedtothefrequentoccurrenceofdroughtandfrost.TheGISlibrarywasusedtomarkzoneswheredeficitirrigationcouldimprovequinoaproduction.Withadataquery,zonesweredelimitedwheretheirrigationcanbeusefultostretchthelengthofthegrowingseaso

6、nbeyondthelimitsoftherainyseasonand/ortomitigateintra-seasonaldryspells.Determinednetirrigationrequirementswereusedtoassessthevulnerabilityofthedelineatedzones.Tworegionswithahighvulnerability,aseveredroughtriskandanacceptablefrostriskaretheeasternregionoftheAltiplanoandtheinter-

7、saltdepressionregioninthesouth.Together,theyaccountforaroundone-thirdoftheAltiplanoarea.In1yearoutof2,irrigationintheseregionscanstronglyimprovecropproduction.TheuseofirrigationinotherregionsoftheAltiplanowillbelessbeneficialeitherbecausetheirrigationrequirementsarelow(regionaroun
