3、reductionandeconomicgrowth(WorldBank2000a).Therefore,theBankispreparingCountryGenderReviewswhichidentifyandanalyzeprioritygenderissuesconstrainingdevelopment.TheywillbeavailableforESW,CASandprojecttaskmanagersandstaffwhooftenlackresourcestoresearchgenderconcerns(Zuckerman2000).Introductioninc
4、e1949,theChineseCommunistParty(CCP)hassoughttochangetheunequalrelationshipSbetweenmenandwomenandtoprovidelegalprotectionforwomen.Inmanyways,women’sstatushasimprovedoverthelast50years.Someofthemostperniciousmanifestationsofgenderinequalitysuchasbindingwomen’sfeethavebeeneradicated.Womenhavebee
5、nprovidedaccesstoeducationandthepoliticalprocess,longdeniedthem.Butdeeplyentrenchedpatriarchalcustoms,suchasthepreferenceforaboy-childandinferiortreatmentofgirlsinruralfamilies,persist.OtherbackwardgenderpracticesthoughttohavebeeneradicatedduringtheMaoerahavebeenreemergingduringthetransitionf
6、romastatetoamarketeconomy,includingfemaleinfanticide,traffickinginyounggirlsandprostitution.Atthesametime,thetransitiontoamarketeconomyhaspermittedwomentobecomesuccessfulentrepreneurs.TherearemanycomplexitiestoChina’sgendersituation.China’slawsguaranteeingandpromotinggenderequalityareenlighte
