3、006;accepted1September2006AbstractAshortcutbiologicalnitrogenremoval(SBNR)processconvertsammoniumdirectlythroughnitritetonitrogengas,thusrequiringlessaerationandcarbon.WeevaluatedahybridSBNR(HSBNR)reactorcontainingananoxictankfollowedbyanaerobictankandasettlingtank.Theaerobictankw

4、asfilledwithpolyvinylalcoholspongemedia(20%,v/v)toattachandretainammoniumoxidizers.TwoconfigurationsoftheHSBNRreactorweretestedfortreatingawastewaterwithhighstrengthammoniumandorganicelectrondonor.TheHSNBRreactorsaccumulatednitritestablyfor1.5yearsandmaintainedahighfreeammonia(FA)co

5、ncentration(20–25mg/L)andalowdissolvedoxygen(DO)concentration(<1mg/L)intheaerobictank.Apparently,thebiofilmcarriersincreasedthesolidsretentiontime(SRT)forammoniumoxidizers,whilehighFAandlowDOselectedagainstnitriteoxidizersandpromoteddirectdenitrificationofnitriteintheaerobictank.The
