4、ringHeadoftheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineeringiiiABSTRACTTheuseofanalternativemethodforspindleandmachinetoolmetrologyisinvestigatedindetail.Amasteraxisofrotationisusedtocharacterizetheerrormotionsofamachinetoolspindleinsteadoftraditionaltechniquesthatuseamastersphereorflatasanart

5、ifact.Themasteraxismethodallowsforcomprehensiveanalysestobetakenofaspindle,suchasmeasurementofstructuralloopstiffnessatspeed.Theeffectofspindleloading,bothstaticanddynamic,whilesimultaneouslymeasuringerrormotionatspeedisalsofeasibleusingthemasteraxis.Inthisinvestigation,themaster

6、axismethodisusedtocharacterizethespindleofa3-axisverticalmillingmachine.Resultsshowthespindleerrormotionsareaffectedbythespeedandappliedload;acharacteristicthatmaynotbemeasuredpracticallybytraditionalspindlemeasurementmethods.Practicalmeasurementofdynamicstiffnessofaspindleatspee
