2、smoothbehaviouronmacroscopicspaceandtimescales,whileonlyamicroscopicevolutionlawisknown.Forsuchtime-dependentmulti-scaleproblems,an“equation-free”frameworkhasbeenproposed,ofwhichpatchdynamicsisanessentialcomponent.Patchdynamicsisdesignedtoperformnumericalsimulationsofanunavailablemacroscopicequatio
3、nonmacroscopictimeandlengthscales;itusesappropriatelyinitializedsimulationsoftheavailablemicroscopicmodelinanumberofsmallboxes(patches),whichcoveronlyafractionofthespace-timedomain.Toreducetheeffectoftheartificiallyintroducedboxboundaries,weusebufferregionsto“shield”theboundaryartefactsfromtheinterior
4、ofthedomainforshorttimeintervals.Weanalyzetheaccuracyofthisschemeforadiffusionhomogenizationproblemwithperiodicheterogeneity,andproposeasimpleheuristictodetermineasufficientbuffersize.Thealgorithmperformanceisillustratedthroughasetofnumericalexamples,whichincludeanon-linearreaction-diffusionequationandt
