3、risanactivequeuemanagement(AQM)schemeataninter-mediatenode.Inthispaper,weintroducethemajorTCCmechanismsandAQMschemes,andprovideanalyticalmodelsandsimulation-basedcomparisonsoftheseTCC/AQMschemesforthepurposeofidentifyingthereciprocalrelationshipbetweenTCC
4、mechanismsandAQMschemesinQoS-enablednetworks.Theresultsshowthattheequilibriumanddy-namicsoftheunderlyingnetworkdependsontheharmonybetweentheTCC/AQMpairs.TheNewReno/PIpair,afeedback-basedmechanismencompassingbothnetworkandend-systems,canenhancetheperfor-ma
5、nceofpacketlossanddelaysensitiveapplications.Inouropinion,anappropriatecombinationofactivequeuemanagementfromthenet-workandTCPsourcereactionwouldprovideane®ectivesolutiontotheinstantaneousnetwork°uctuationwhichoccursontheInternet.1IntroductionMillionsofus
6、ershavestartedtousewiredand/orwirelessnetworksandtheamountoftra±chasincreasedconsiderably.Inaddition,newpeer-to-peerap-plicationssuchasNapster,Kazza,ande-donkeyhaveledtoanincreaseintheamountoftra±c,andtherehasalsobeenasigni¯cantriseintheamountofmultimedia
7、tra±csuchasaudioandvideo.Onesigni¯canttechnologicalbreak-throughwhichfacilitatedthisgrowthwastheintroductionofcongestioncontrol[1],whichallowedmanyuserstosharethenetworkwithoutcausingcongestioncollapse.Althoughthebest-e®ortservice,whichwasusedintheearlyda
8、ysoftheInternet,wasadequateaslongastheapplicationsusingthenetworkwerenotsensitivetovariationsinlossesanddelays,itisnolongeradequate,duetotheexplosioninthenumberofdi®erentapplications.Tosolvethisproblem,inthelastfewy
