3、ishingofcountlessarticlesofimpoliteness.However,responsestoimpoliteness,whichmayreveal“howimpolitenessistobetaken”(Culpeperetal.,2003,p.1562),havenotreceivedmuchattention.Besides,mostresearchesonresponseoptionstoimpolitenessoverlookedthesituationswherethereexistsequalityofpo
4、wer,especiallydiscoursesofmarriedcouples.ThisthesiscontributestoinvestigatingthesimilaritiesanddifferencesinresponseoptionstoimpolitenessadoptedbymarriedcouplesinChinaandAmericaaswellasthesimilaritiesanddifferencesinthecorrespondingcommunicativeeffectsofresponseoptions.Theda
5、taselectedinthisthesisare97extracts(520turns)takenfromBeautifulHousewivesandDesperateHousewives(Season8).ThenthecollecteddatawerecountedandanalyzedbydintofStatisticPackageforSocialScience(SPSS)software.Theresultsshowthat:firstly,nosignificantdifferenceoccursinthefrequencieso
6、fresponseoptionsadoptedbyChinesemarriedcouplesandAmericanmarriedcouplesonthewhole.Counteringismorefrequentlyrealizedinthecollecteddatathanacceptance,stayingsilentandcompromise.Intermsofcounterstrategies,offensivecounterstrategiessharealargeportioninbothChineseandAmericandata
7、,butoffensivecounterstrategiessharealargerportioninChinesedata.Thepossiblereasonsmayberelatedwithculturalvalues,socialintimacy,powerandetc.Secondly,asforcommunicativeeffects,thenegativepragmaticeffects(thedestructionoftheinterpersonalrelationship)areuniversalinimpolitediscou
