4、epresentperfectaspectandthatofthepastperfectaspectbasedonthepolysemyofthepresenttenseandthepasttense，andthesemanticinteractionsbetweentenseandtheperfectaspect，evenfewerscholarshavetriedtofigureoutaconsistentandreasonableexplanationtosomesyntacticandpragmaticconstraintsrela

5、tedtothepresentperfectaspect，e．g．，“thepresentperfectpuzzle"，whichhaveactuallybeenbotheringtheEnglishgrammarianssincelongbeforeandwhicharerealnutstocrack．Thereforeitisofboththeoreticalandpracticalsignificancetostudythepolysemyoftenseanditssemanticinteractionswiththeperfecta

6、spect．Firstofall，withrespecttothestudyoftenseinEnglish，threemajorviewpointshavebeenformed：(1)tenseisagrammaticalisedmeansoftime-distinctions，(2)tenseisadeicticcategory,(3)tenseisoneofthetwogroundingelements，andtwoconsensuseshavebeenreached：(1)therearetwosubcategoriesoftens
