2、IPNETWORKSByZhiweiCenInIPnetworkbasedremotesensingandcontrolsystems,theoperatorcontrolsaslavemanipulatorwithsensingcapabilitieslocatedataremotesite.Controlcom-mandsandsensoryfeedbackaretransmittedthroughcomputernetworks.Thecontrolandsensingdatainvolvedinsuchsyste

3、msdifferentiatethemselvesfromothermediatypesinthattheyrequirebothreliableandsmoothdelivery.Reliabledeliveryre-quiresthatthetransportservicehaveTCPstylesemantics.Bybeingsmooth,thetransportserviceshouldbeabletodeliverthecontrolandsensingdatawithboththeaveragelatency

4、andthestandarddeviationofthelatencyboundedandreduced.Traditionaltransportserviceshavegreatdifficultymeetingthelatencyrequirementsofdeliveringsensingandcontroldataoverthecommunicationnetworks.Remotesensingandcontrolsystemscouldbedeployedindistantgeographicallocation

5、s,orplaceswherenetworkinfrastructuresarenotavailable.Intheformercase,theInternetisanidealcommunicationchannelduetoitsavailability.Inin-frastructurelessenvironments,MobileAd-hocNetworks(MANETs)canbeagoodchoice.However,thetransportprotocolsinboththeInternetandMANET

6、shavedifficultymeetingtheneedsofthistypeofapplications.WeproposedaSupermediaTRansportoverOverlayNetworks(STRON)frameworktoimprovetheQoSoftele-operationsystemsoverwideareanetworks.AQoSmanagementframeworkisalsoproposedtosupportSTRONbasedteleoperationsystems.ATranspor

7、tserviceforRemoteSensingandControl(TRSC)overWirelessNetworksisdesignedforMANETbasedapplications.Theproposedapproacheswereverifiedusingexperiments,net-worksimulatorsandtheoreticalmodels.Thepopularityofthird-generationwirelesscommunication,handhelddevicesandlocalare
