3、98.Therelationshipsbetweenregionalduststormscorrespondingtootherfactorssuchasprecipitationandtemperatureareexplored.Theresultsshowthatfiveleadingmodesofduststormsexistinthefollowingareas:theTaklamakanDesert(TarimBasin)overtheXinjiangregion(farnorthwesternChina),
4、theeasternpartofInnerMongolia(NorthChina),theTsaidamBasin,theTibetanPlateau,andtheupperreachesoftheYellowRiver(GobiDesert).Theseareasareassociatedwithanaridclimateandfrequentwinds.ForthefirstmodeintheTarimBasin,mostduststormsappearinthe1980s,whileduststormsbecom
5、elessfrequentinthe1990s.Thesecondmode(NorthChina)showsthehighestfrequencyofduststormsinthemid-1960sbutthefrequencydecreasesafterward.Thethirdmodeindicatesadecreasingtrendofannualduststormsafterthemid-1960sbutwithahighinterannualvariability.Thefourthmodealsoshow
6、sadecreasingtrendbutwithalowinterannualvariability.Thefifthmodedisplaysahighfrequencyofduststormsinthe1970sfollowedbyadecreasingtrend.Forthefivemodesofduststormdistribution,fourofthecentersarelocatedindesertregions.Theannualduststormsofaselectedstationineachmoder
7、egionareshowntocomparethecoefficienttimeseriesofthesemodes.Thenegativecorrelationbetweenthepriorwintertemperatureandduststormfrequencyisidentifiedformoststations.Thereisnoconsistencyinthecorrelationbetweentheduststormfrequencyandtheannualrainfallaswellasthepriorw
8、interrainfallatthesestations.TheactivityofduststormsinnorthernChinaaredirectlylinkedtothecycloneactivity,especiallyfortheinterdecadalvariability.r2004ElsevierLtd.Allrightsre
