3、resonancesarefoundatopticalfrequencies.Duetotheresonantcharacter,thelight-matterinteractioncanoftenbeapproximatedbytreatingthequantumsystemasaneffectivetwo-levelsys-tem,i.e.byconsideringonlythosetwo(electronic)levelswhosedifferenceinenergyisclosetotheinteractingphoton

4、energy¯hω0.Inthischapterwewillconsidersinglequantumsystemsthatarefixedinspace,eitherbydepositiontoasurfaceorbybeingembeddedintoasolidmatrix.Thematerialtobecoveredshouldfamiliarizethereaderwithsingle-photonemittersanddetectorsandwithconceptsdevelopedinthefieldofquantum
