3、csandlaboratories,seemstohaveuseditinthisway.Asearchoftheprofessionalliteratureshowsatleastthatnoonehaschosentodiscusssuchauseinprint,andafairlyextensiveinquiryamonghypnosisexpertsfromavarietyofcountrieshasnotturnedupanyonewhoadmitstofamiliaritywithapplicationsoftheprocesstointerrogation.Thereisth

4、ereforenoexperimentalevidencethatcanbecited,butitshouldbepossibletoreachtentativeconclusionsaboutitseffectivenessinthisfieldonthebasisoftheoreticalconsiderations.TheNatureofHypnosisExperimentalanalysishasgraduallygivenusabetterunderstandingofhypnosissincethedaysofMesmer(6)andhisfollowers,whoheldth

5、atitresultsfromtheflowofaforcecalledanimalmagnetismfromhypnotisttosubject.Nevertheless,althoughnopresent-dayinvestigatorsharesthelingeringlayopinionthathypnosisisinsomewayanoverpoweringofaweakmindbyasuperiorintellect,therearestillmanydivergenttheoriespropoundedtoaccountfortheaccumulatingclinicalob

6、servations.Someofthesehavesignificantlydifferentimplicationswithrespecttothesusceptibilityofahypnotizedpersontopurposefulinfluence.TheviewthathypnosisisastateofartificiallyinducedsleephasbeenwidelyheldsinceBraid(7)inventedtheterminmid-nineteenth-century.CurrentlyPavlov(20)takesasimilarpositioninma
